Located on the hill side across the crumbling bridge
Towards the old stone buildings where the elders used to live
The wind chill on the back, the smell of rain upon the air
A localised disturbance where they once declared a war
At this desolate location
The coming of the storm

Across the sea they voyaged, amassed the hawkish thrall
Washed up on eastern beaches to administer their call
They marched toward the village with their armaments in tow
To convert the heathen masses by the book or by the bow
Their own beliefs assured
They would fight before they’d go

With the fire in their eyes
And their orders to baptise
They set upon destruction
No will to compromise
Cooking up the saga
To satiate their hunger for change

With defence of sword and pitchfork, together they replied
Men stood with bold resistance with the women at their side
The bravest of the youngsters joined them at the gate
Repelled the leading forces but it just delayed their fate
As the last man was cut down
None converted or escaped

The echoes of the battle still rattle through the trees
A thousand foreign pilgrims brought the village to its knees
No marks upon the country, no scars upon the moor
Nothing left to indicate the carnage from before
The forgotten apparitions
They have no-one left to haunt anymore
