The mist rolled in on a summers day
As the fishing fleet sailed in
Lined along the coast the minstrels start to sing
They never knew of the coming threat
The malice in the air
Then came the roar as they stood and stared

Blasting high in the summer sky
The dark volcanic rain
Whilst along the coast the vassals still remained
As the mountain shook and the sky went black
And fire hid the sun
An echoed scream just turned and run

In the rain, the rain of dust
Caustic and perilous
In the rain, the rain of dust
With the air aglow
A pyroclastic flow
Sweeping down the hillside towards the town below

The dust took hold in a choking grip
And the black smoke scarred the brick
Drawing down the fumes they’d never felt so sick
The heat came forth to melt the lungs
And with one last gasp of air
They gazed above in quiet prayer

And now at dawn in amongst the vines
When the mist hangs on the hills
If you close your eyes you can feel their traces still
Wondering through the ancient streets
In a densely crowded throng
